Dragon Boat Teams

The Home Team

Many teams call the John M.S. Lecky UBC Boathouse home. The following are a list of teams that practice out of the facility and may be looking to recruit team members.

team_titleReason for being

The Fraser Dragons dragon boat team was created in 2005 by a group of people who were interested in exercising and having fun with a water sport, choosing dragon boating because of its close ties to breast cancer survivorship. While some of the team knew each other, they were mostly strangers to one another who had been recruited by friends, relatives and work mates. Team members came and went over the next couple of years, and a cohesive close group emerged in 2007 that was committed to both the team and to Dragon Boating in general. That commitment is maintained today.

Team Mandate

  1. We are a rec team.
  2. We commit to paddling for fun, exercise, pride of sportsmanship, and for camaraderie.
  3. We are supportive of one another in developing expertise and experience in the sport of Dragon Boating.
  4. We are competitive, but only to the extent that the competition doesn’t interfere with the fun and the camaraderie.
  5. We work toward improving our capabilities as a team, individually and collectively, to the best of our ability, thereby also improving our health and fitness levels.
  6. We are role models and leaders to new members of the team.
  7. We strive to be ambassadors to the sport of Dragon Boating both within the team as well as within the dragon boating community.

Team Recruitment

The Fraser Dragons, after determining who from the previous year’s team is returning, will recruit new members mainly by word of mouth, and from the UBC Boathouse Drop-in Clinics.

Team Type

Mixed Seniors (55+)

Season Length

March to mid September (some of the team members are hardy enough to brave the elements between October and March)

team_titleReason for being

The twisted dragons came together in 2009 as Richmond’s first Senior Dragon Boat team, in order to compete in the BC Senior’ games. The Dragon Boat competition for the Games was held at the UBC Boathouse that year.

Because the team was in its infancy, they missed the BC Senior’s Games in 2010, however intend to rectify that in 2011 by taking part in the Dragon Boat Competition being held in Nelson BC this year. Since the Twisted Dragons are a relatively new team, they are very much in the growth and development stage at this time.

Team Recruitment

Recruitment for the Twisted Dragons takes place in the spring after seeing who is returning for another year of exercise and competition. Once returnees are determined the Twisted Dragons will recruit new members by word of mouth, and from the UBC Boathouse Drop-in Program. The challenge faced by this team is to find seniors who are interested in paddling and also interested in taking part in competitions. The team manages to pull together like minded seniors and they have a great time at all the competitions they join.

2011 Racing Schedule

  1. 200 M Dash in Deep Cove – April 16, 2011
  2. Richmond Dragon Boat Festival (Rip Up The River) – July 16, 2011
  3. BC Senior’s Games in Nelson BC, Paddling Competition to be held August 18, & 19, 2011
